چکیده

Ever since Yllp0 published his valuable contribution to the subject of icterus neonatorum in 1913, it has seemed almost certain that the liver of the newborn infant is far less efficient than that of the adult in excreting bile pigment. Nevertheless very few direct studies of the excretory capacity of the liver of the newborh infant have been made, and the work reported here was carried out in the early part of 1947 under the impression that there were no previous studies ofbromsulphalein excretion in the newborn. However, before the work was completed it was discovered that Herlitz had carried out bromsulphalein tests as long ago as 1926 and that more recently Salmon and Richman (1943) had worked on the problem. Our results were seen to be very similar to those of Herlitz, who found a definite impairment of excretion in the newborn, but in view of the fact that the findings of Salmon and Richman were altogether different it was felt worth while to complete the work and to present it.

Liver function in newborn infants with special reference to excretion of bromsulphalein.

The theory that neonatal jaundice is produced mainly by haemolysis of excess red cells present at birth has been strongly criticized in recent years (Weech, 1947; Findlay, 1946) and increasing emphasis has been placed on the role of the liver in the genesis of this form of jaundice (Weech; Findlay; Mollison, 1948). Direct evidence that the liver in newborn infants is unable to function adequate...

Effect of age on liver function with particular reference to bromsulphalein excretion.

Little is known about the effect of age on liver function. The only study to date is that of Rafsky and Newman (1943) who found increased retention of bromsulphalein in 16 of 39 normal subjects over the age of 70 years compared with a group of 11 subjects aged 60 to 70 years. Liver weight is known, however, to decrease with age. Boyd (1933) analysed 9,886 necropsies and found that the decrease,...

Exercise Electrocardiogram in Myxoedema

An unexpectedly high incidence of abnormalities in the sulphobromophthalein (Bromsulphalein) excretion test, and to a smaller extent in other tests of liver function, was found in patients taking allopurinol and in those on uricosuric treatment. The reason for this is not apparent, but there is no evidence that either type of drug treatment was responsible. It is as yet uncertain whether allopu...

A case of hereditary elliptocytosis associated with constitutional indocyanine green excretory defect.

A 24-year-old woman was diagnosed as having hereditary elliptocytosis and post-transfusion hepatitis. On admission, a marked delay in indocyanine green (ICG) plasma clearance was noted while bromsulphalein excretion was almost normal. Even when her levels of serum bilirubin and transaminases were decreased to the normal ranges and a liver biopsy revealed no evidence of any liver cirrhosis or ac...
